Metallization
Components made of plastic, glass, ceramic or even metal are coated in PVD coating systems with metal layers ranging from a few nanometers to some microns thickness to achieve decorative or functional properties. Optical reflectors, semi-transparent mirrors, electro-optical elements, heatable surfaces, diffusion barriers, electromagnetic shielding (EMC layers) or decorative packaging can be realized.
Thin metal layers can be protected from corrosion in a subsequent SiOx plasma polymerization process or by a topcoat.
The optical quality of metallized surfaces can be significantly increased in combination with a smoothing base coat. In some applications, PVD/paint systems can replace environmentally harmful galvanic layers.
